Protection is a mechanism defined in later 802.11 standards which allow 'legacy' clients/APs to co-exist with the newer clients/APs without causing interference, etc. By default, this mechanism is typically turned on. However, if network administrator is confident that there are no legacy clients/APs in the environment, then the Protection mechanism can be turned off. This can potentially improve throughput in an all 802.11g or all 802.11n network.
